Pushya Kandil · a sanjhi paper-cut film
From one sheet of paper
Five days before Dhanteras, goldsmiths, potters and ledger-makers wait for three faint stars. Whatever is begun under them is said to last. We cut their story into a kandil.
Pencil on handmade paper: the goldsmith at his crucible.
Sanjhi: every leaf and lattice opened by hand.
The first of six makers, lifted to the light.
Six panels, a jali roof, a red thread to hang it.
Under Pushya, the goldsmith pours.
One diya inside, and the paper turns to gold.
A thousand diyas for a thousand doorsteps.
A fresh ledger for the new year's accounts.
The threshold, lit by three stars.
On every Gujarati threshold
શુભShubh
લાભLabh
Written beside the door at Diwali, Shubh asks for an auspicious start and Labh for honest prosperity. We put them in your greeting too, in your script and your family's name.
The last panel
Scroll, and watch the street come home.
